DIY Toddler Gumball Machine Costume

This DIY gumball machine costume is a recreation of one of my own Halloween costumes from the past. Before my daughter came along, I made a fun gumball machine costume that was beyond easy and affordable. It was so cute and I got lots of compliments on it. I thought it would be fun to make this same costume for Kennedy and I’m so glad I did. How cute is she?!

My goal for this costume DIY was to *try* and spend under $25. My total for this toddler gumball machine costume ended up being $10.89. I used items we already had, got a couple new things, and mostly just spent some time with my glue gun to pull this one off. Success!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • White top
  • Red skirt/shorts/pants
  • Pom poms
  • Hot glue gun
  • Grey felt
  • Sharpie marker
  • Headband or bow for an accessory (optional)

HOW TO

  1. Take your white top and bottoms, marking where the shirt will be tucked in. It’s easier if you try the shirt and bottoms on together to be most accurate. You won’t want your pom poms going any lower than that mark.
  2. Hot glue pom poms all over the front of the shirt in a circular design, very closely together, as to not leave much space.
  3. Make a “25 cent” sign and coin slot using a small piece of grey felt and sharpie marker. Attach to the top of your bottoms using glue, needle and thread, or a safety pin.
  4. Optional to add an accessory like a bow or headband. Add pom poms for fun.

I’m not kidding when I said this DIY gumball machine costume was super easy. Truly the most time spent will be gluing pom poms and other than that, you’ll just need to get your kid (or yourself) dressed. I think it looks so adorable and is a fun and clever costume idea that you don’t see very often.

  1. And while you could buy them something from the store, in many cases doing it yourself can help you save money on their Halloween costume. That’s not the only reason to make your own, though. If you have your heart set on who or what you want your little one to be — like a character from your favorite storybook — there’s no need for disappointment when you can’t find what you want in a store. The sky’s the limit when you DIY.
