What To Wear To A Wedding

Wedding season is officially here and if you're anything like us, you've already received a handful of save-the-date cards! As soon as we make plans to attend a wedding, the first thing that pops into my head is "what will I wear!?" There are several factors one must consider when deciding what to wear to a wedding or any special event, but these three big ideas are where I always like to start.

DRESS CODE

This is often times listed on the wedding invitation and/or website, but you can always ask the bride or groom or take a look at the venue to get a better idea. Obviously a beach wedding will likely be much more casual than an evening wedding held at a grand location. Be thoughtful when choosing the length and style of the dress you might wear with location in mind.

For men, a suit with a jacket is almost always going to be a best bet unless otherwise specified. Michael always errs on the side of being slightly overdressed than under, which I think is super smart! (Way to go, honey!) A jacket and/or tie can always be removed if you show up and the guys are dressed slightly more casual.

BE COLOR SMART

I feel like this should go unsaid, but I'm going to go ahead and say it... do not wear white to a wedding that is not your own! There are very rare occasions when a bride has her bridal party wear lighter hues on purpose, but unless you are asked to, just don't do it! Instead, opt for colors and patterns that are seasonally appropriate and/or fall in line with the feel and color scheme of the wedding. Spring and summer weddings are my favorite to dress for because there are so many beautiful floral and girly options, which give off a super romantic and sweet feeling - perfect for a wedding celebration! And when in doubt, a LBD is always a safe bet. Paired with the right shoes and accessories, you can make a black dress work for any occasion!

PRACTICALITY + COMFORTABILITY

Obviously make sure your dress is practical when it comes to moving around and breaking it down on the dance floor, but equally important are your accessories and shoes. For instance, I give a lot of thought to the clutch I bring to a wedding. Sound crazy? Maybe so, but I refuse to carry a full size purse around at an event, yet I still need room to hold my phone, lipstick, credit cards and Michael's things. Yes, ladies, please tell me I'm not the only one who holds their man's stuff!? :) I actually don't mind at all, but it does require bringing the right bag!

And then of course you must think about your shoes. If you're planning on dancing the night away, or even if there will be walking to/from the venue, be smart with your choices! I've made one too many shoe mistakes to underestimate how important this piece of advice is. Thinking through the heel height and style are my biggest deciding factors. Ever notice how stilettos sometimes sink into soft ground? Yeah, you'll want to avoid those styles if there's going to be any outdoor walking! My safest bet is almost always a wedge! Comfortable, easy to walk in, and still cute.

Keeping all those ideas in mind, I've rounded up some options for different occasion weddings that would be perfect for this summer down below! What are your go-to tips and tricks for planning out what to wear to special events like these!? Would love to hear from you in the comments!
